The first official day of summer is right around the corner, and the summer vacation season is in full swing. A large contingent of the US population will be traveling to vacation destinations around the nation over the next few months.
As usual, a large percentage of those travelers had been planning on vacationing along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, but with the millions of gallons of oil spewing in to the Gulf and polluting large portions of the coast, many are undoubtedly rethinking their destinations.
Here's an idea we should all consider if we have travel plans. If you have plans on going to the Gulf Coast, do it anyway and if you have plans of traveling elsewhere, travel to the Gulf Coast instead.
We all know that the Gulf Coast relies heavily upon summer travelers for their economic well being. The vast majority of their annual income is earned during the summer tourist season, so if everyone stays away because of the oil spill this will be a tremendous economic disaster as well as the ecological disaster it already is. We also know that there is so much that needs to be done to help clean things up and their are a number of volunteer organizations in need of volunteers.
So, before you head out on vacation, do a little research on what organizations need volunteers along the coast during this crisis. Make arrangements to join up with and help the organization you like best while on your trip, and turn your vacation into the trip of a lifetime. Make it even more memorable by volunteering your time while you are down there.
Think about it. Would your trip be more meaningful to your entire family if you went down and helped rescue birds, otters, and such, or would it be more meaningful if you all lounged around on the beach the whole time? While you're their, you would also be helping the economic well being of the area because you would be needing lodging, food, etc. You may even be able to write off a portion of the costs of your trip on your taxes because of your volunteerism. It would be a win-win situation for everyone!
Let's show the world what this country is really all about. Let's stop whining about how the government isn't doing enough, and do it ourselves. Let's do it!
